Second report from the Provincial of Japan

Ten days have passed since my first report on the situation in Japan immediately after the earthquake and tsunami of March 11. The number of victims has increased daily, to over 24,000, as more bodies are discovered and more people are reported missing. Meanwhile, the critical situation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant is causing concern not only in Japan but around the world as well. Local farm and dairy products have shown higher levels of radiation, and only yesterday warnings were issued concerning contamination of the Tokyo metropolitan water supply.

Japanese Jesuit offers Novena for Japan

As Jesuits and people around the world continue to pray for the victims of this disaster and for all those providing rescue, relief and support to those impacted by this crisis, a Japanese Jesuit has begun a novena for the people of Japan. 

After the disaster: Update from the Jesuits in Japan

First of all, let me express my appreciation for the many messages of condolence and encouragement we have received from around the world. You are surely aware of the enormity of the these catastrophic days in Japan, beginning with a 9.0 magnitude earthquake, followed quickly by colossal tsunami, and crippling the nuclear power plant that supplies a large portion of electric power to the Tokyo metropolis. Myriad aftershocks are felt daily.

Br Hernández Honored for Chaplaincy

Br Manuel Hernández (JPN) was presented a certificate of merit from the National Commission for Prison Chaplains and Counselors on October 18. In this article, he wrote about the occasion.

The Jesuit Social Centre opened a new migration desk and the Tokyo Public Law Office inaugurated its Legal Assistance Section for Foreigners.

New Superior for Japan

Father General has named  Fr Yoshio Kajiyama new Provincial of the Province of Japan. Fr Yoshio was born in 1955, and entered the Society of Jesus in 1980 and ordained a priest in 1990. He currently serves as Superior of the Kojimachi Residence in Tokyo and as Socius to the Provincial.

Working for Buddhist-Christian dialogue

Great loss for interreligious dialogue

The interreligious dialogue apostolate recently suffered the loss of two of its dedicated advocates, Fr Albert Poulet-Mathis (CHN) and Fr Bill Johnson (JPN).

Prayers for Fr Matsu

Last September 24, while he was visiting Japan, Fr Koichi Matsumoto (JPN) was hospitalized. He apparently suffered a hemorrhage in the brain and was operated upon the following day. Fr Matsu is the Director of the Arrupe International Residence in Manila, Philippines. Please keep him in your prayers.

Education Colloquium in Fukuoka

The Education Colloquium of the Jesuit Education Commission for Asia Pacific was finally held in Fukuoka, Japan, from August 1 to 5. Originally scheduled last year, the colloquium was postponed due to the AH1-N1 virus scare.
